PAINTER|CARVER|MULTIMEDIA

Dennis Kenny

I am a Dene, self-taught artist and have been working at my craft and skill for the past twenty four years, first drawing and painting and now carving.  Art was my passion in school and now I consider myself to be an established wildlife artist.

I have sold my works both nationally & internationally and have also donated to Non profit organizations.  Much of my artwork depicts the landscape and wildlife around the Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories, where I was born and raised.

When painting I use very fine detail to portray wildlife in its natural habitat   I believe that my traditional Dene upbringing has given me a unique understanding of nature, and I try to portray this through my artwork.

In 2005, I won the NorthWestel phonebook cover contest, and in May 2006 I graduated from NAIT’s Interactive Aboriginal Multimedia Program.  I have now expanded my work to include graphics through multimedia programs such as, Flash, Photo Shop, Graphic and Web Template Design.

Other accomplishments and training include:

  • Aurora College, Fine Arts Program, Inuvik (1996)

  • Internship at Canadian museum of civilization in Ottawa (1996)

  • Attended numerous art festivals in Western Canada

  • Art project coordinator for Deline Land Corporation (taught students the basic of stone carving and acrylic painting)

  • Numerous solo exhibitions

  • Invited to Japan as artist representative for NWT

My major artistic influences come from my Dene way of life, and how my people coexisted with wildlife, since time immemorial. I believe that art is an effective way to show the world how we lived and interacted with the wildlife for food and shelter, and continues to teach us how we can learn from these traditional ways
